6 Tips for Promoting Your Art
hflowers • June 27, 2023

As an artist, your priorities are creating masterpieces and promoting your art. If you’ve chosen this life (or it’s chosen you), you know it’s more than a passion; it’s your livelihood.  Give yourself a financial edge and the breathing room to create abundantly by attracting and retaining fans and buyers. Here are six simple tips to help you promote your art in front of an ideal audience.

Showcase your craft and your personal style by creating a website that appeals to buyers and enthusiasts.

1. Do Your Research

If you already have a few fans of your work, now is the time to pick their brains on what they like most about what you do and why they’re a fan in the first place. Understanding who you’re currently attracting will help you understand the bigger picture of your target audience.

Ask them questions like:

  • Where do you like to shop for art?
  • What social media platforms do you spend the most time on?
  • How do you enjoy learning about new artists?

2. Identify Your Niche

Every artist has a medium and style. Are you an impressionist painter? Are you a traditional-style weaver? Whatever type of art you create, label it, give it a name, and use it to your advantage. If no one else is doing what you do, that makes you unique and attractive to potential buyers. If you’re a small fish in a big pond, it might be time to reevaluate your work and see if there’s a specific identifier you can claim.

3. Create a Compelling Website

You can’t effectively promote yourself and your work without a digital presence. Showcase your craft and your personal style by creating a website that appeals to buyers and enthusiasts. Having an Etsy store isn’t enough—give people a place where they can get to know you. Your website can be as straightforward or complex as you want it to be, but ensure visitors can purchase pieces directly from the website and contact you for custom orders!

4. Show your work at Art Festivals, Competitions, and Exhibitions

There’s no better way to get your name out there than talking one-on-one with a potential buyer. Check out your local and regional event calendars to see what types of art events are happening near you. Apply for a booth and put your total effort into the application (you can even link to your website!). While, yes, these can be pretty exhausting and effort-filled, they can pay off in more ways than one.

Get involved in setting up art fairs and events where you and the other artists in your area can sell their wares.

5. Tap Into Your Local Community

Depending on your location, you might have a bustling art scene you’ve never experienced. Talk with other like-minded artists about how they’re promoting their work. Join your city’s art council or artist guild if they have one. Get involved in setting up art fairs and events where you and the other artists in your area can sell their wares. There are so many things you can do just in your local community to make yourself known.

6. Always Be Promoting

Remember when you asked your supporters what social media platforms they liked to use? Make sure you head to those platforms and create a profile! You don’t need to be on every social media platform—just the ones your ideal customer uses. We highly recommend Instagram for artists because it’s a great platform to show off your creativity through photos and videos. Always promote yourself wherever makes sense for your brand.

Find your audience, make it easy for them to find you online and in person, and get out there to promote your uniqueness, skill, and fantastic art.
