Tips for Displaying Your Art
hflowers • June 27, 2023

You’ve finally found the piece of art of your dreams . It’s gorgeous, fits your space perfectly, and ties the whole room together. Next, you may wonder how you should display your art in your home so it looks its best!

From framing to labeling to mounting, there are a few things to remember when preparing to show off your new artwork in your home or office.

Framing Your Art

Depending on what type of material your new art is printed on, there are several different framing options to consider, such as:

  • Gallery Frames: Gallery frames are typically simple designs, such as rectangular shapes with rounded corners and no ornamentation. They can be made from either wood or metal.
  • Modern Frames: These frames put the full photo on display, excluding the negative space in gallery frames.
  • Float Frame: These frames use clear glass or acrylic instead of a mat behind your artwork, portraying a floating effect against a wall.
  • Deep-Set Frames: The opposite of a floating frame, this type of frame makes a shadow box and creates a subtle, moody, shadow-effect behind the frame.

You will also need to consider what color and style you’d like your frame to have. You don’t want your frame to overpower your artwork or vice versa; they should complement each other.

At Blue Moon Metal Prints, we provide various framing options ranging from simple wood to stunning, finished corner frames and everything in between.

…the most essential part of displaying your artwork is how you mount it on your wall.

Labeling Your Art

Whether you’re displaying your art in your home, office, or business, consider labeling your new investment so guests can learn more about the piece. Labels extend personality to artwork and are a great conversation starter.

Labels for your work of art should include the following:

  • The artist’s name
  • The title of the piece and the year it was created
  • The medium used to create the artwork
  • A brief description (e.g., how the artist created the piece, its story, what it means to them)

Sometimes, art will arrive with this information included, or you can ask the artist if they would mind doing so. If you can’t find this information or are unable to contact the artist directly, get creative! What does this piece mean to you ? Why did you choose to purchase it? How do you interpret its message? Write it down!

Just like choosing the right frame, choosing how to mount your imagery within that frame can change its entire look and feel.

Mounting Your Art

Arguably, the most essential part of displaying your artwork is how you mount it on your wall. There are a few different ways of mounting your design, such as:

  • Over-mount: The most traditional way to mount your artwork, an over-mount, is when your design is sandwiched between a mat board with a window cut in it to reveal the image and a backing board. This is a classic option for most types of prints.
  • Float: A float is where the artwork sits on top of the mat board rather than behind a window, similar to an over-mount. This has a similar effect as the floating frame we mentioned earlier.
  • Easel Fixture : These fixtures work best for smaller pieces that are to be displayed on a horizontal surface, such as table tops, desks, shelves, or mantles.
  • Tile Float: A tile float mount looks similar to an over-mount, except the artwork is mounted to a tile of mat board first and then to a larger mat board piece to give it that nice floating effect.

Just like choosing the right frame, choosing how to mount your imagery within that frame can change its entire look and feel.
